The Rainbow Robin is ‘red-y’ to spread some Christmas cheer around the city

11 December 2020

A special Rainbow Robin character has been created to spread some festive cheer around Aberdeen with colouring in fun along with activities, videos and challenges over the next few weeks.

The cute character was created by local artist Gabi Reith of Small Stories and people can download at Rainbow Robin | Aberdeen City Council and print out the colouring-in page or draw their own, and then display it in their windows similar to rainbows for the NHS during the lockdown.

People are then asked to share photos and experiences on social media with the hashtag #RainbowRobinAbdn.

Residents can also follow the Facebook page @RainbowRobinAbdn, where there will be lots of activities, videos and challenges throughout the 12 days of Christmas, which is from 25 December to 5 January. Expect to take part in Robin Rambles, story time, dance routines, and ideas for making inside and out.

The Lord Provost of Aberdeen Barney Crockett said: “The Rainbow Robin project will be a great source of activities for families in the city and beyond and will be great fun for people of all ages to take part in.

“Parents and carers will be able to access direct support by taking part and interacting with the Facebook page. While most City Council services will be closed for the festive period, this could be a lifeline which can be accessed simply by sending a message.

“I’d recommended everyone to take part by printing or drawing a Rainbow Robin for their window to spread some festive cheer and follow the Facebook page.”

More than 300 packs of craft materials will be going out to families supported by Aberdeen City Council’s family learning service and to families who receive support from C-Fine to enable families to fully take part in the planned activities.

The Rainbow Robin has also been shared with schools and nurseries in the city as well as sheltered housing and care homes - there is no age limit to joining in.

Aberdeen City Council’s family learning and creative learning teams have worked with lots of partners for the project, which brings together inspiration and activities from a several ACC services and organisations including ACC’s Aberdeen Art Gallery and MuseumsCity Moves Dance Agency, ACC’s Duthie Park Ranger Service, ACC’s Library Services and Parents as Early Education Partners (PEEP).
