The remaining recycling centre is reopening on Monday

12 June 2020

The remaining Household Waste and Recycling Centre at Bridge of Don is reopening on Monday (15 June) and all the city’s recycling centres will accept a broader range of materials from the same date.

The Bridge of Don site, on Scotstown Road, will have traffic marshals at the site initially as queues are expected – residents are asked to consider avoiding busy mornings and instead go later in the day. All the recycling centres are open from 10am to 7.45pm from Monday to Friday, and 9am to 7.45pm at weekends (Tullos is closed on Wednesdays).

To allow the recycling centre to reopen, Scotstown Road will be closed for general traffic between its junctions with Dubford Road and Shielhill Road. On Scotstown Road, access to the Household Waste and Recycling Centre and local residents will be maintained and an alternative route for other traffic will be available via The Parkway, Ellon Road, Tarves Road, and Shielhill Road.

Travel to any of the recycling centres at Hazlehead, Bucksburn, Tullos, and Bridge of Don should still only be undertaken if it is really necessary. If householders can store their items safely at home, they should continue to do so in the initial opening phase.

Before they leave their household, residents are asked to ensure they have a proof of address document, such as a current utilities’ bill or driving licence, on their dashboard. Usage of the three sites is restricted to Aberdeen residents only. Pedestrians will not be allowed entry at the sites as per normal restrictions.

The range of materials accepted at the sites is being increased at all recycling sites from Monday. They will accept wood, scrap metal and electrical appliances as well as bagged general household waste, garden waste (no soil or turf), cardboard, and bulky items, such as old furniture. No other materials are being accepted at this time and no large vans or trailers will be allowed.

One person only may leave the vehicle and deposit their waste safely without help from site staff, who cannot help as they must observe social distancing guidelines. Businesses are reminded that commercial waste is not permitted.

Aberdeen City Council operational delivery convener Councillor John Wheeler said: “It’s good to see the last of our four recycling centres is reopening and I’m sure residents in the Bridge of Don area will appreciate it.

“People are reminded they should try and go to a recycling centre at a quieter time if possible as they’re still busiest in the mornings and queues will be expected at Bridge of Don for several days.”

People should check the website www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/covid19 before travelling to a centre to check if there are any changes, and for a more detailed list as to which materials can, and cannot, be accepted.
