Thousands of spring bulbs planted around Aberdeen

The first of 250,000 spring bulbs, which are to be planted in communities around Aberdeen as part of a City Council initiative, have been sown.

Schools, community groups, volunteers and friends of park groups have braved the autumn chill to plant crocuses and daffodils that, come spring, will provide an explosion of colour to Aberdeen’s parks and gardens.

Aberdeen City Council Communities, Housing and Infrastructure vice convener Councillor Jean Morrison said “the hard work and commitment of these groups, schools and individuals is fantastic and makes a huge difference to the green spaces across the city.

“Our Environment Service Team does a tremendous job encouraging and supporting the community bulb planting across Aberdeen, and as winter approaches it is great to know that come spring we will see the results around the city, with swathes of daffodils and crocuses in many of our parks and green spaces”.

One of the highlights of the planting will be at Seaton Park, where they have received 70,000 bulbs which will bloom in time to mark the 70th anniversary of the park in 2017.

In addition, 100,000 have been distributed by Aberdeen Rotary as part of their Purple4Polio campaign. Union Terrace Gardens, Slopefield Allotments, and Victoria and Westburn Parks have all received bulbs and teams of volunteers have been busy popping them in the ground.
