Torry joggers set for the long-run
22 May 2018
Torry residents took to their heels will be taking to their heels yesterday evening (Monday 21 May) as they kicked off a new evening jogging initiative in the area.
The inaugural Jog Torry, was the first in a ten week block of introductory Monday jogging evenings beginning from Torry Sports Centre on Oscar Road.
The sessions are delivered in partnership between Aberdeen City Council’s Communities Team and Jog Scotland and will be supported by Community Foods Initiatives North East (CFINE) which will be supplying water and energy bars for the jogging enthusiasts.
Last Monday (14 May) saw a dozen people attend a registration and taster session and more are expected to come along to the first session.
The initiative is aimed at helping participants get fit and have fun in sociable, supportive jogging groups with trained jog leaders. The friendly sessions are open to joggers of all levels with beginners welcome.
Councillor John Wheeler, Operational Delivery Convener said: “What a fantastic initiative and it’s really heartening to see the positive comments from participants on Torry Communities Team Facebook page.
“With the fabulous support of our partners Jog Scotland and CFINE, I’m sure that jogging in Torry is going to be terrifically popular in the community.”
Jog Scotland Participation Project Coordinator, Laura Kirkland said: “We’re really delighted to see this new group launching in Torry. It’s an area where we don’t have any jogging groups at present, and there are clearly plenty of people who are keen to get active – we already have 15 signed up for the group ahead of its launch, which is brilliant.
“The group will support absolute beginners, and we’ll help them build up gradually, alternating jogging and walking, and before they know it, they’ll be running further than they ever imagined they could. The great thing about Jog Scotland groups is that we aim to make sure everyone enjoys getting active, so I’m looking forward to seeing the group build new friendships, and create a really sociable, supportive atmosphere.”
Jog Torry follows hot on the tracks of a successful two kilometre family run organised by the Communities Team and Jog Scotland at Tullos Primary school which saw 80 pupils, parents and teachers take part.
