Union Bridge structure granted consent

08 June 2018

Listed Building Consent has been granted for a permanent safety structure on Union Bridge in Aberdeen’s city centre.

Temporary fencing has been in place in front of the bridge parapet on Union Street.

LDA Design was commissioned by Aberdeen City Council to draw up detailed plans, which were approved last month [May] by officers under delegated powers.

Because of Union Bridge’s heritage value, Listed Building Consent was also needed.

The design respects the bridge’s historic nature while blending with proposals to revitalise Union Terrace Gardens (UTG), which were also produced by LDA Design.

The barrier is to be made from steel and powder coated in a copper colour.

It is scheduled to be installed a part of the Phase 1 of the UTG project, detailed plans for which were approved in March.

The detailed timeline for the work will be known once a contractor is appointed.

Councillor Marie Boulton, lead on the City Centre Masterplan, said: “The addition of a permanent safety structure on Union Bridge was a priority for the Council and I’m delighted that the scheme is ready to progress.

“In bringing this project forward as part of the Union Terrace Gardens redevelopment we have ensured the design fits with the wider City Centre Masterplan vision for the Denburn Valley.”
