Upperkirkgate to re-open to traffic during festive period

Upperkirkgate in Aberdeen city centre will re-open to eastbound traffic on Sunday 10 December.

The decision will ease traffic flow during the busy festive period. Businesses in the Upperkirkgate area have been advised of the plans, lifting the current closure between the junctions with Flourmill Lane and Gallowgate.

Cllr Marie Boulton, Aberdeen City Council’s spokesperson for City Centre Masterplan projects, said: “Reopening Upperkirkgate in December will enhance accessibility and traffic flow during the busiest shopping month of the year and is a positive step forward as we work towards the overall vision for Broad Street and the surrounding area.

“We are continuing to engage with traders on Upperkirkgate, with a meeting scheduled for early in the New Year to provide a further update on the milestones and timeline of the project.”

Following discussions with stakeholders, a single lane reopening was decided upon to take into consideration the increased pedestrian footfall in the area generated by the Aberdeen Christmas Village.

Works to complete the project will commence again in January 2018 a further update on planned closures will be given at this time.

The Upperkirkgate improvements are part of the £3.2million Broad Street project, designed to transform and revitalise the area by making Broad Street pedestrian-priority in a programme which will also improve the streetscape and turn it into an area capable of staging events throughout the year. The design is part of the 25-year City Centre Masterplan.
