Views sought on proposed Wellington Road corridor improvements

The public’s views are to be sought to help define and assess transport improvement options put forward for the Wellington Road Corridor.

An initial pre-appraisal study was completed by Nestrans in 2015, which focussed on the assessment of the transport-related problems on the route, and it also identified several potential ways to improve it.

In considering potential options, a focus was given to interventions which could help to lock-in the benefits that will be delivered by the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR).

A more detailed STAG Part 1 transport appraisal study is now underway, to further define and assess options for improving the Wellington Road Corridor.

The options put forward from the pre-appraisal study include pedestrian improvements, segregated cycle lanes, off-road dual use cycleways, a Craigshaw Drive dual use cycleway, a toucan crossing at Abbotswell Road, a toucan crossing, at Langdykes Road, more/better crossings at Souterhead and Hareness roundabouts, shared bus/HGV priority, Souterhead roundabout improvements, Hareness roundabout improvements, an upgrade to dual carriageway at the former HM Craiginches Prison site, closure/access restriction at the Redmoss Road / West Tullos Road central reserve, electronic information signs, a sustainability package, a bus quality package, a low emission zone, a right turn/traffic signal priorities review, and a directional signage review.

The outcomes from this work are being assessed further as part of this STAG Part 1 Study, seeking to sift the long list of potential transport improvements into a shorter list of options which could best resolve problems.

The study area for the project stretches for approximately three miles between the A90/A956 Charleston Interchange and the Queen Elizabeth Bridge.

A targeted programme of public and stakeholder engagement will be held as part of the study, including an online questionnaire available from https://consultation.aberdeencity.gov.uk/planning/wellington-road-multi-modal-corridor-study. Hard copies will be available from community centres and libraries south of the River Dee, Central Library and Marischal College’s reception area. The questionnaire will be available until Sunday 7 May.
