Woodside Primary pupils turn published authors for Scottish Book Week

23 November 2016

Primary 5 pupils from Woodside Primary School held a very special book launch today (Wednesday 23 November) at Woodside Library – of their own published work.

Since August, the children have been writing their own books for Primary 2 pupils at the school and have timed the launch to celebrate Scottish Book Week. The exciting, descriptive and colourful works use onomatopoeia, highlight key words for learning and also use Scots words.

Some of the books have their own QR code so smartphone users can scan and listen to the pupils reading their books aloud.

Elaine Page, Woodside Primary School Depute Head Teacher, said: “The Primary 5 children have spent the last few months writing, editing and illustrating their very own picture books. They were inspired by the work of the Children’s Laurette, Chris Riddell who they met at the Beach Ballroom in September. The pupils were delighted when the finished picture books arrived back from the printers last week.

“As a school, we are very proud of the pupils, they have worked exceptionally hard on this project and have created books that they can be proud of for years to come”.

Councillor Angela Taylor, Education and Children’s Services Committee Convener, said: “The creativity and dedication of school pupils and staff across Aberdeen never fails to impress me. The Woodside Primary 5 pupils have come up with yet another fantastic idea and, as well as enabling them to become proud published authors, the project also gives them some responsibility in helping younger children with their reading.

“Staff at Woodside Primary School deserve enormous credit for this great initiative.”
