Woodside pupils join forces with Police Scotland for road safety campaign

Pupils at Woodside School have joined forces with Police Scotland to highlight to drivers the potential impact of speeding near their schools.

The youngsters have become Junior Road Safety Officers for the six-week duration of the ‘Speedwatch’ campaign. Working in partnership with police officers they are helping to educate drivers who have been caught speeding along Clifton Road.

The campaign is an extension of a pilot scheme that took place in Tillydrone last year and involved Riverbank School.

Head Teacher, Alison Cook, said: ‘Our Junior Road Safety Officers are looking forward to working in partnership with Police Scotland over the coming weeks. We are keen to help to improve road safety around Woodside School and see this as a very important project. We are delighted that the children have been asked to take part and hope that their involvement will highlight to any driver that they need to pay attention to their speed’.

Councillor John Wheeler, Education Operational Delivery Convener, said: “I’m delighted to see our schools working in partnership with Police Scotland on such an important issue in an initiative which could save lives.

Sergeant Richard Roach of the Tillydrone Community Policing Team said: "Road safety is a significant concern for parents in many schools and Police Scotland is fully committed to reducing incidents on our roads and works in partnership with schools to support this agenda.

"I would remind those who do the school run to not obstruct driveways, and do not park on zig zag lines next to schools. Speeding is always a top concern in any community especially near schools. Drivers should always drive cautiously near schools and slow down.

"We hope our activity with the pupils at Woodside and Riverbank Primary Schools will highlight road safety to both pupils, parents and local commuters and the importance of taking care when driving or walking to and from school."
