Fostering - Support

Peer Mentoring Scheme

The peer mentor scheme offers an additional support to people nearing the end of their fostering assessment.  Mentors are established, approved foster carers with lots of skills and experience and who have undertaken the peer mentoring training.  It is recognised that new carers benefit from having an experienced carer to support and help to navigate the initial stages in their fostering.  Each party will be supported and guided by their own supervising social workers.

Support Groups

The carers support group is run on the first Thursday of every month.  The aim of the group is to provide a safe place where foster carers can meet and offer each other peer support.  Staff members from the fostering team will also be there to offer additional support and provide any service updates.

Occasionally, there are organised speakers and information of these will be sent to carers in advance.

There is plenty space for children to play and toys will be provided.  This group is open to all carers and no pre-booking required.

Talking Teenagers

The ‘Talking Teenagers’ support group is for carers who care for teenagers.  The group meets virtually each month, on a Tuesday morning (10.30am – 12), or a Wednesday evening (6.30 – 9pm).

Each month the group covers a different topic with a discussion afterwards.  Guest speakers are invited to talk about their area of expertise. The aim of the group is to support carers, provide them with an opportunity to learn, meet other carers and share experiences.  Carers can also suggest topics that they would like to discuss.  Talking Teenager’s is an informal group, and held via Microsoft Teams.

PEEP Group

Peep Group for foster carers is running every Tuesday at the Deeside Family Resource centre in Tullos.  It is from 10-11am with some time for a chat and a hot drink afterwards until around 11:30.  Peep sessions have a different learning theme every week where we sing songs, play games, read stories, and do arts & crafts.  The group is run by Erin Brodie, Family Resource Worker from the Fostering team and Rachel McIver, Family Learning Worker. The age for attendance at peep is 0-5.  This is a very popular group and limited spaces. If you are interested in joining this group please contact us at the email address below.

Sons and Daughters

The Sons & Daughters part of the service offered support to the children of foster carers.  It is recognised that being part of a fostering family can be both very rewarding and difficult at times, having to share their home and parents with other children. There are two parts of this service, the support group and support via individual Mentoring .

The group meets every two months and provides an opportunity for children and young people to meet up and exchange experiences and receive support from staff and other children from other fostering families.

The Mentoring Scheme is designed to offer individual peer support from other children/young people who have had experience of being part of a fostering family for a few years. This is supported by the Sons and Daughters worker to ensure all involved is supported appropriately. There is also opportunity to message and meet with the Sons and Daughters worker for individual support if required

The Sons and Daughters worker will maintain contact with the children from the point of assessment, though to approval and beyond. If your child would like to come and join us when we meet up or like us to visit to or if you would like any further information or have any questions then please contact ebrodie@aberdeencity.gov.uk
