ABZWorks offers support to parents and carers

Parents and carers living in Aberdeen, who are unemployed or experiencing in-work poverty are being offered support to achieve their goal of getting a job, a better job, further education or training by ABZWorks, Aberdeen City Council’s Employability and Skills service.

Aberdeen City Council Co-Leader, Councillor Christian Allard, said: “Being able to access employment or progress into a better paid job can be a way out of poverty for many people.

“Ensuring parents and carers in Aberdeen have equality of opportunity to employment and progression is not only beneficial to the parents and their families, but to all of us.

“I would encourage all unemployed parents or carers, and parents and carers who are struggling in this cost of living crisis, who live in Aberdeen, to get in touch with ABZWorks to find out more about the support and opportunities available to help get them into work, access better jobs to improve their quality of life.”

The Parental Employability Support Fund offers:

  • free training and funding, and certified training courses;
  • benefit checks to ensure parents are receiving funds they are entitled to;
  • an individual key worker who will create a bespoke action plan;
  • money management help and advice; confidence building; improved overall wellbeing;
  • a flexible, individually tailored approach;
  • coaching to help build digital skills;
  • help to find childcare;
  • financial support to ease the transition into employment.

Parental employability support is available to parents living in Aberdeen with dependent children, who meet the below criteria:

  • Parents with a youngest child is less than one years old, who are unemployed or experiencing in-work poverty;
  • Parents with three or more children who are unemployed or experiencing in-work poverty;
  • Lone parents who are unemployed or experiencing in-work poverty;
  • Parents with a disability or families in which there is a disabled child, who are unemployed or experiencing in work poverty;
  • Parents from a minority ethnic background who are unemployed or experiencing in-work poverty;
  • Parents who are aged under 25 years old who are unemployed or experiencing in-work poverty;
  • Parent(s) must have the right to live and work in the UK.
