Advice to residents and businesses ahead of industrial action

Unions representing members within waste and recycling; and environmental services are planning to take industrial action in a national dispute over pay, which is likely to affect operations at a number of local authorities across Scotland in the coming weeks.

Unions Unite and GMB are calling on members in Aberdeen to strike from 5am on 14 August – 4:59am on 22 August.

While the Council will work to minimise the impact of any action, it is possible that domestic, business, and litter bin services may be affected during this period.

Residents are asked to put their bin out for collection by 7am on their usual collection day and take it back if it is not emptied by the end of the day. Bins should not be put out again until the next scheduled collection day.

Affected residents and businesses are asked to store their waste and recycling safely until the Council can return to collect it.  Residents are also asked to take litter and dog waste home with them if litter bins are full.

Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRCs), which will be open as usual during these times, can be used if residents have an excess of household waste or recycling. Bookings to visit an HWRC are only needed if using a large van or trailer or for the disposal of  paint or chemicals. Residents should remember to bring proof of city residency with them to gain access. Local recycling points are also available for excess recycling.

To assist in prioritising emptying bins and removing litter, bulky uplift and replacement bin services will be suspended until further notice. There may also be delays in dealing with flytipping reports.

The Council will be keeping residents updated about all service impacts – which might not be known until the day – via our website and social media channels.

Please note that pay settlements for council workers are a matter for Scottish local authority body Cosla and determined through negotiations with unions at the Scottish Joint Committee, a process which is ongoing.
