Residents of Aberdeen were today asked to ensure they do their bit for their community and for the city by keeping their local area a “clean, green, part of the ‘Deen”.
The appeal came at the launch of the annual Clean Up Aberdeen project which had Keep Middlefield Clean there as well as pupils from Manor Park School and other local residents.
The launch means everyone in the city is being encouraged to help to Clean Up Aberdeen by not dropping litter, litter-picking, and appreciating wildlife in their own neighbourhood. These small differences carried out by an individual can make big changes to making entire communities cleaner, greener, and brighter for everyone to enjoy.
Aberdeen City Council Co-Leader Councillor Christian Allard said: “We all want our neighbourhoods to be tidy, clean, and green places and Aberdeen City Council wants to help local communities to help themselves to achieve that – we’d remind people in the first instance not to drop litter.
“Clean Up Aberdeen is a positive initiative to encourage people to do their bit for where they live, as collecting litter when out and about as well as organised litter picks really starts to add up and improves the environment for wildlife, people, and the overall community.”
Aberdeen City Council Education and Children’s Services Committee convener Councillor Martin Greig said: "It is great to see the enthusiasm and commitment of the primary school pupils in helping to clean up the area as their example is a useful reminder that we all share responsibility to take action and reduce litter.
“They are really taking a lead in their local area and making a difference to improve the city’s environment. I am very grateful to the youngsters at Manor Park School for the help and support they are giving to look after their local community.”
Community groups and individuals wanting to carry out a litter pick can get help from the Council on how to organise an event, providing litter-pickers, and arranging collection of black bin bags.
As well as making the city more beautiful, some of the annual clean ups survey the waste which is found around the city including the beach and provides valuable data to the Marine Conservation Society and Keep Scotland Beautiful. This data helps identify issues and focus campaigns to improve the environment.
Clean Up Aberdeen is aligned to the national campaign Keep Scotland’s Spring Clean Scotland 2025, and also ties into Climate Week North-East. Keep Middlefield Clean is holding litter-picks on 28 March, 4 April, 11 April, and 18 April.
