Council seeking to establish Music Centre for school pupils to reflect increase in demand

Aberdeen City Council’s Education Operational Delivery Convener, Councillor Martin Greig, today (Wednesday 21 September) spoke about the authority’s plans to establish a new Music Centre serving pupils across the city.

Councillor Greig’s motion that officers explore models and costings in order to create a Music Centre, given the rise in demand following lockdown, and report back to a future committee was approved earlier his month at the Education and Children’s Services Committee.

The committee also requested that data on the digital provision of music tuition be provided in future updates to help gauge how it could help develop engagement and musicality in pupils and also to ascertain the degree of movement from face-to-face to digital learning.

The Chief Officer for Education was also instructed to continue to develop opportunities for music ensembles and to provide an evaluation of the provision of music across the city in order to report the findings back to the committee within the next year.

Councillor Greig said: “The proposed music centre will aim to coordinate delivery of music education across the city. Young people with musical interests and talent should be able to develop their skills wherever they live and the centre will help them build up expertise in the subject as individuals and in groups.

“It will be good to strengthen links with the university and others in the local music community and a partnership approach will help us to achieve more in the interests of all young people.

“Aberdeen should become a city of music once again.”
