Aberdeen City Council has taken ownership of its new £23million Greyhope School and Community Hub following completion of building work on schedule, it was announced today (11 October 2023).
The keys to the new school and community hub were handed over on Monday 09 October by contractor Morrison Construction Building North East, which delivered the project for the council along with Hub North Scotland.
Councillor Martin Greig, Aberdeen City Council’s Education and Children’s Services Convener, said: “I am very pleased that we have now taken ownership of the new Greyhope School and Community Hub. We can now start the process of fitting out this fantastic building. It will not only be a school for hundreds of pupils but will be a real community hub with welcome facilities for the local community.
"It's especially good to know that the project, like Countesswells School, was delivered on time and on budget."
Vice-Convener, Councillor Jessica Mennie, said: “To have the construction work completed and to get the keys to the new school and community hub is wonderful. We can now look forward to getting the new facilities in place and ready for pupils and staff and the wider community.”
The Greyhope School and Community Hub has been built on the former Torry Academy site on Tullos Circle. The total cost of the build and fit-out of the new school and community hub, including the removal of the previous school building from the site, will be £28million. The school build benefited from £2m Regional Capital Grant Funding from the Scottish Government.
Greyhope School and Community Hub will provide a primary school for up to 434 primary-age pupils with Early Learning and Nursery provision for up to 100 children. The building will benefit from having a range of essential services from housing, community learning, library, café, and health services that can all be accessed from the one location.
Mike Bruce, managing director of Morrison Construction – North East, said: “Morrison Construction and our local supply chain are delighted to have completed the construction of Greyhope School and Community Hub on time, safely and on budget. We hope that everyone from the local area will make full use of the facilities in the coming months and years.”
Ewen Fowlie, operations director at hub North Scotland, who were Aberdeen City Council’s development partner for the project, said: “This has been another great team effort to deliver a fantastic school and community facility which will be a focal point for Torry for generations to come.”
Walker Road School staff and pupils will relocate to their new building on 01 November 2023 alongside a range of services that will provide an integrated partnership approach that will serve the Torry community.
Following a walkabout with parents and representatives of Greyhope Parent Council last week (Wednesday 04 October) a third pupil access point will be available on Mansefield Place to ensure all pupils can safely access their new school building from 01 November 2023.
Greyhope School and Community Hub is the second of two new primary school projects that have been delivered for Aberdeen City Council by Hub North Scotland with Morrison as main contractor. Countesswells School was completed earlier this year.
