Early Learning and Childcare provision changes to reflect demand

Some of Aberdeen City Council’s Early Learning and Childcare provision is set to change to meet local demand from the start of the new school year in August 2024.

The new provision is the result of regular analysis of uptake and a survey carried out by the Council’s Early Learning and Childcare team, which saw a significant increase in engagement with parents, carers and families, to help ensure that provision meets the needs of families and children.

Applications for places at Aberdeen City Council’s Early Learning Childcare and Nursery settings will open online on Tuesday 30 January 2024.

Councillor Martin Greig, convener of the Education and Children’s Services Committee, said: “Early Learning and Childcare is an important service that provides welcome support to improve child development and attainment. Some updates will be made to this service following the consultation with parents and carers.

“The feedback from everyone who responded to the survey has been much appreciated. Their comments help to ensure that we meet the demands of individuals and families. This engagement is essential as we work together in the interests of the young people."

Councillor Jessica Mennie, vice-convener of the Education and Children’s Services Committee, said: “Access to Early Learning and Childcare can help the wellbeing of children and families, and give parents and carers greater opportunities to work, train or study.”

The expansion of Early Learning and Childcare provision has increased from 600 to 1,140 funded hours since 2021 and has seen 18 new building projects to deliver the provision across the city.

Parents and carers of children who are ‘continuers’ (those already attending an Early Learning Childcare setting) in the city will be contacted directly by their current Early Learning Childcare / Nursery setting to ascertain their preferences, and do not need to apply for a place.

If the provision at their current location is due to change then the families of ‘continuers’ will be given priority for their preferred option at an alternative location.
