King George VI bridge is to reopen in both directions over the next few days after specialist repairs, resurfacing, and waterproofing work has finished ahead of schedule.
Resurfacing and paving of the central section is being completed today and lining and streetlight cabling works are scheduled to happen tomorrow. There will also be other finishing works for the south-bound section in the next few days including reinstating slabs within the pavement.
The bridge is due to reopen on Tuesday and the current restrictions on the Bridge of Dee which were put in place to allow HGVs – which are not normally allowed to use it due to weight restrictions – will also be lifted at the same time.
Both north -bound lanes on the bridge are currently open and one of the south-bound lanes will be open in the next few days. The other south-bound lane will be closed for a further two days to allow for safe working while finishing off the pavements over this section.
Motorists should be aware there will be overnight closures of both north-bound lanes only on Monday 26 June and Tuesday 27 June to allow for expansion joint and other finishing works.
An Aberdeen City Council spokeswoman said: “We thank people for their patience while these works were on-going however they were essential for this historic bridge.”
Motorists can use Queen Elizabeth bridge, Victoria Bridge, or the City Bypass as an alternative until King George VI bridge reopens. The work on the bridge was due to finish at the end of the month.
