Voter ID

Make sure you’re ready to have your say on 4 July

With two weeks left until voters go to the polls on 4 July, the Returning Officer is reminding voters in Aberdeen to get ready to vote in the United Kingdom General Election.

Polling places will be open for voting from 7am until 10pm and voters are reminded that, in order to vote in person at a polling station, they will need to be registered to vote and show accepted photo ID such a passport, driver’s licence or a Young Scot card.

People who don’t have accepted photo ID can apply up until 5pm on Wednesday 26 June for a Voter Authority Certificate, which will allow them to vote in person. See https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate for more information.

Anyone who finds that they will not be able to attend the polling station in person may apply to vote by proxy. Applications to vote by proxy will need to be submitted before the deadline at 5pm on Wednesday 26 June. See https://www.gov.uk/apply-proxy-vote for more information.

Angela Scott, Returning Officer for Aberdeen City Council, said: “Your poll card will tell you where to find your polling place. Make sure you check the information on your polling card, as your polling place might have changed since the last elections. You do not need your poll card to vote, however, we encourage you to bring it with you in addition to your accepted voter photo ID or Voter Authority Certificate which you must bring along.

“If you have mislaid your poll card and are not sure where your polling place is you can contact our elections office at 01224 045450 or email elections@aberdeencity.gov.uk”

Andy O’Neill, Head of the Electoral Commission in Scotland, said: “Anyone voting at a polling station will need to show photo ID before they can be given their ballot paper at the UK general election. It’s important that everyone understands what types of ID they can use, and how to apply for free ID if they need it. You can find information about the new requirement and what to expect at the Electoral Commission’s website”
