Aberdeen Armed Forces Day

New route for Armed Forces Day parade

Serving military personnel, veteran associations, reservists, cadet and youth organisations, accompanied by local pipe bands, will march along a new route in Aberdeen’s Armed Forces Day parade on Saturday 29 June 2024.

The parade will start at Albyn Place at 11am and go along Union Street, Union Terrace, Schoolhill, Upperkirkgate and Broad Street. The Lord Provost of Aberdeen Dr David Cameron will take the salute outside in front of the City’s official flagpole on Broad Street.

The parade is expected to take approximately 30 minutes and will end at the Castlegate.

The parade’s traditional route has been changed due to the planned major works to upgrade Union Street’s Central area, which got underway yesterday (Monday 29 April) as part of the City Centre and Beach Masterplan.

The Lord Provost of Aberdeen Dr David Cameron said: “Aberdeen’s Armed Forces Day parade is a wonderful opportunity for people to show their support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, from currently serving personal, veterans and cadets.

“The new route will see the popular parade go past Union Terrace Gardens, His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen Art Gallery before it heads down Schoolhill and up Upperkirkgate towards Marischal College on Broad Street.

Accompanied by the military and local pipe bands and the crowds waving the handheld flags designed by one of our primary school pupils, it will be a great spectacle for all ages to be part of.”

Anyone connected to the armed forces (serving personnel, veteran, cadet, or reservist) who would like to be involved in the city’s Armed Forces Day parade, should contact the City Events team at cityevents@aberdeencity.gov.uk

Primary school children in Aberdeen are being invited to enter the Council’s Design an Armed Forces Day Flag competition. The winning design will be printed on handheld flags, that will be distributed to members of the public who line the city centre streets to show their support for the UK Armed Forces past, present and future.

The entry form and details of the competition including the three age categories, prizes and how to submit a design, can be found here.

The closing date for competition entries is Friday 17 May 2024.
