Pupils celebrate first day at new multi-million-pound school

Pupils celebrated their first day at the new £23million Greyhope School and Community Hub in Torry yesterday (Wednesday 01 November).

Aberdeen City Council’s newest school replaces Walker Road School and has room for up to 434 primary pupils and 100 Early Learning and Nursery places.

The hub will host a range of essential services including housing support, community learning and health services, and a library and café.

Councillor Martin Greig, Convener of Aberdeen City Council’s Education and Children’s Services Committee, said: “I was very pleased to join the pupils at Greyhope School and Community Hub and see their delight at their new school, which will undoubtedly enrich their learning experience.

“I am sure that it won’t be too long before the Community Hub is a hive of activity with people able to access key services on their doorstep.”

Councillor Jessica Mennie, Vice-Convener, of the Education and Children’s Services Committee, said: “I was delighted to spend time with pupils and staff on what was a very exciting first day at the new Greyhope School and Community Hub. The building is a fantastic community asset for everyone living in the Torry area.”

The Greyhope School and Community Hub has been built on the former Torry Academy site on Tullos Circle. The total cost of the build and fit-out of the new school and community hub, including the removal of the previous school building from the site, was £28million.

The school build benefited from £2m Regional Capital Grant Funding from the Scottish Government.

The new school was delivered by the council’s development partner Hub North Scotland with Morrison Construction-Building North East as main contractor and architects Halliday Fraser Munro, and follows delivery of Countesswells School in March 2023.
