Report outlines improvements in reporting on care experienced young people

The benefits of enhanced data-gathering and reporting on care experienced young people through ongoing innovations by the Council’s Children’s Services team and external partners, was highlighted in an annual report approved by councillors today (Tuesday 20 February).

The statutory Children’s Services Board Annual Report for 2023/24, presented to the Education and Children’s Services committee will now be submitted to the Scottish Government for review.

In addition to outlining the interventions undertaken to improve reporting also proposes changes to the agreed Aberdeen City Integrated Children’s Services Plan to support community planning partners to respond positively to changes in published data and national policy changes.

Committee convener, Councillor Martin Greig, said: “This is a significant report which complements and integrates with the recently published Chief Social Work Officer Annual Report and Corporate Parenting Plans. It is good to see that ongoing improvements are highlighted. The work ultimately benefits the children and young people in our care.

“This annual report also outlines emerging changes and themes based around consulting with care experienced young people. Listening to them and gathering information helps us work together to make a positive difference to their lives. The Local Outcome Improvement Plan has also been updated so that we can coordinate activities on their behalf.”

The committee also approved a recommendation that the Interim Director, Children’s and Family Services report back within two committee cycles on proposed approaches to progressing:

  • More family-centric approaches to support families living in Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation 1 facing complex challenges
  • A whole-system approach to addressing obesity.
