Stage Sponsor Announced and Entries open for Corporate Cycle Race

As part of the Getabout Aberdeen Cycling Festival, Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeenshire Council and Sweetspot are pleased to announce that entries are open for this year’s Corporate Race.

The Corporate Race is open to teams of four riders, one of which must be a female, and is a team relay with each rider required to complete two laps of the city centre route on Saturday 3 September.

Education Convener Councillor Martin Greig said: This is a splendid event to promote cycling for all ages.

“It's good to raise the profile of cycling to try and become a more bike friendly city. It's a great activity and an important means of green transport.”

Education vice convener Councillor Jessica Mennie said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for people of all ages to team up and get involved in a fun and friendly competition.

“The Corporate Race is just one of many activities happening in Aberdeen at the start of September and is something that the whole family can come together and enjoy.”

Nick Rennie, CEO of Scottish Cycling, said: “The culmination of last year’s Tour of Britain in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire was an excellent spectacle and it is fantastic to build on that success this year with a Cycling Festival ahead of the maiden stage.

“Giving local people and companies the opportunity to cycle on the same city centre circuit that the pros will use as part of Stage 1 is a great opportunity and one not to be missed. I am looking forward to trying the route out, at a much slower pace, on the streets of my home city.”

The race is just one event on a day of cycling fun with races and opportunities for all ages to ride the circuit, culminating in the Scottish Criterium Championships, showcasing the very best of Scotland’s cycling talent.

TotalEnergies will also serve as this year’s stage sponsor for the first stage of the Tour of Britain, which will depart from Aberdeen’s city centre and finish spectacularly at the Glenshee Ski Centre on Sunday 4 September.

Jean-Luc Guiziou, Managing Director of TotalEnergies E&P UK said: "I'm delighted that we're sponsoring the Tour of Britain's Grand Départ from Aberdeen this year.

“As our community emerges from the pandemic events such as this one bring us together and offer us the chance to celebrate and support the cities and towns we call home, whilst also participating in this thrilling sport.

“I'm pleased that there are so many opportunities for people to take part and enjoy the events taking place across the entire weekend, and in particular, I look forward to cheering on the participants in the corporate and main cycling races. Best of luck to everyone taking part!"

Applicants to the Corporate Race can apply now via the British Cycling website.

It is advised to enter before 20th August to give entrants enough time to arrange team tops if they desire.

If the race becomes over-subscribed, then places will be allocated through a ballot for last places.
