Thousands of people lined the streets of Aberdeen today (Sunday 11 September) to say farewell to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as she made her final journey south.
The people of Aberdeen were able to view the funeral cortege as it travelled through the city from Balmoral on its way to Edinburgh.
The route in the city’s boundary included the A93 at Peterculter, Milltimber, Bieldside, and Cults. The cortege then travelled along Great Western Road to its junction with Holburn Street, turned right on to Holburn Street and then down Great Southern Road passing Duthie Park, over the King George VI Bridge and onto Great Southern Road to the Stonehaven Road (A92).
The Lord Provost of Aberdeen Dr David Cameron in his role as Lord-Lieutenant led the city’s tribute as the cortege passed Duthie Park and was joined by the Co-Leaders of Aberdeen City Council, the Chief Executive, Elected Members, the Vice Lord-Lieutenant, Deputy Lieutenants and other distinguished guests.
He said: “The city turned out in huge numbers today to pay their respects to Her Majesty The Queen as she took her final journey from her beloved Scottish home in the North-east.
“We were honoured to be here to say farewell and show Her family and indeed the world how well-regarded and loved The Queen was in the City of Aberdeen – she will be greatly missed.”
Members of the public wishing to lay floral tributes for Her Majesty The Queen in Aberdeen can do so on the grassed area outside Marischal College on Broad Street.
Cards accompanying flowers will be removed and then forwarded to Aberdeen City Council’s Civic Team for retention. These will not be forwarded to Buckingham Palace on the request of the Royal Household.
All floral and other items placed by the public will be removed in a respectful manner the day after the State Funeral.
