Works started on Lighthouse Support Centre and Donside Community Church Project in Tillydrone

CHAP Group have begun essential renovation works on the former Tillydrone Library and Family Centre following a successful Community Asset Transfer request.

The Lighthouse is a local charity based in Tillydrone that has been working in the area since 2003 providing a range of services and support for those who need it within the community.

Donside Community Church is a new church which began in 2021 in response to a desire for a new community church in the area and serves a growing congregation from within Tillydrone and surrounding areas.

The Lighthouse Support Centre successfully took ownership of the Tillydrone Library and Family Support Centre following the completion of a Community Asset Transfer in November 2022.

Aberdeen City Council is committed to supporting local community groups through Community Asset Transfers, with successful transfers bringing benefits to the group and wider community.

Local community groups or interest groups can make a request to take over publicly owned land or buildings if they feel they can make better use of them for their community under the Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act 2015.

Convener of Communities, Housing and Public Protection, Councillor Miranda Radley, said: “I am pleased the renovation works on the former Tillydrone Library and Family Centre are now progressing following the successful Community Asset Transfer.

“Aberdeen City Council is committed to supporting local community groups, such as The Lighthouse, through Community Asset Transfers given the benefits it can bring to our communities.”

John Merson from the Lighthouse said: “After almost 20 years serving the local people from rented premises, we are delighted to now have a permanent home of our own in the heart of the community.

“Ownership of the building and our planned refurbishment will mean we can do more for the people of the area, both in growing our existing groups and services, and introducing new activities. We are so grateful to Aberdeen City Council for their collaboration and support in the Community Asset Transfer process - thanks to the Council and our many volunteers, partners and supporters, the Lighthouse future is bright!”

CHAP Group’s Pre-Construction Director, Andy McNair, said: "We worked closely with the Lighthouse Support Centre team to meet their budget in today’s challenging construction market. The outcome ensures the new facility meets their requirements and is a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone.”

The construction project is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
