Aberdeen raises Armed Forces Day Flag as mark of respect

The official Armed Forces Day flag is flying high in Aberdeen today (Friday 23 June) at the start of a week-long tribute to the UK Armed Forces.

Aberdeen’s Armed Forces Day parade will be held next week (Saturday 01 July) and the Lord Provost of Aberdeen Dr David Cameron in his role as His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for the city, raised the flag in a show of appreciation and respect to UK Armed Forces – serving, veterans and cadets – during the short ceremony outside Marischal College, Broad Street.

Rev Louis Kinsey, who is a forces veteran, blessed the flag before it was raised by the Lord-Lieutenant. Following a few words by the Lord-Lieutenant in tribute to the Armed Forces Rev Kinsey closed the ceremony with a prayer.

The Lord-Lieutenant of Aberdeen Dr David Cameron said: “Raising the Armed Forces Day flag on the eve of Armed Forces Day is a chance to show our support to our armed forces ahead of Aberdeen’s Armed Forces Day parade on Saturday 01 July.

“The flag raising ceremony marks the start of week-long tribute to our Armed Forces as the flag will remain in place until Monday 03 July, giving residents and visitors alike, parade participants and spectators a greater opportunity to see the flag flying proud in the city centre.”

Deputy Lieutenants of Aberdeen, Aberdeen City Councillors and representatives from The Gordon Highlanders and the Royal British Legion attended the event.
