A winning design by twelve-year-old Lilly Russell from Cornhill Primary School, has been selected to be printed on 2,000 hand-held flags for Aberdeen’s Armed Forces Day 2023.
The Lord Provost of Aberdeen Dr David Cameron, in his role as His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant and the Lady Provost of Aberdeen Hazel Cameron chose Lilly’s artwork, from 500 entries. The hand-held flags will be given out to spectators at Aberdeen’s Armed Forces Day parade on Saturday 01 July.
Prizes were also awarded to Emily Cai from Robert Gordon’s College and Nina Cowie from Broomhill Primary School for their designs. The three winners received a family pass to the Gordon Highlanders Museum, a “Bydandy” cuddly toy and a voucher for Hobbycraft.
The Lord-Lieutenant of Aberdeen Dr David Cameron said: “I was thrilled to present Lilly with her prizes for her winning flag design. The competition was very popular this year with almost 500 entries, which made choosing the overall winner extremely difficult. I would like to thank every pupil who submitted a design as they were all brilliant.
“The waving of our unique hand-held flags is great for our Armed Forces, serving, veterans and cadets to see as they take part in the parade.”
Residents and visitors are invited to watch the parade which will feature more than 1,000 serving veteran and cadet force personnel parading through the city centre, where they will be joined by massed pipes and drums and vintage military vehicles.
The parade begins at 11am at Albyn Place and then heads down Union Street to the Castlegate.
As the parade passes the Town House, the Lord Provost of Aberdeen Dr David Cameron, in his role of Lord-Lieutenant, will take the salute along with top military personnel.
