Lend and Mend

As part of a project with The Scottish Library & Information Council, Central Library has recently launched its ‘Lend and Mend Hub’, located in the Media Centre.

The hub features six sewing machines and an overlocker that will help the local community to repair, reuse, and upcycle everyday items, with free access for everyone to keep items in use for longer, rather than them being thrown away.

Events

The teams from Repair What You Wear Aberdeen and Prolong are hosting a series of events within the Hub.

Get to grips with sewing machines with Repair What You Wear

Mondays, 5.45pm - 7.45pm in the Lend and Mend Hub, Central Library

Monday 7 October, Monday 14 October, and Monday 28 October

This class is designed for those who want to use sewing machines, for repair and creative projects but don’t have experience.  It will cover threading machines, all core stitching techniques, handling materials and problem solving. This short one-off course is the best grounding to coming back into the library to use the machines in your own time.

Spaces are limited so booking essential. Sessions open for booking seven days in advance.

NB: This is a one-off course with the same session taught every Monday. Please only book on to one session.

Denim Jeans Tote Bag Upcycle Project with Rachel of Hackley Design Studio (Tuesday mornings)

Tuesdays, 10.30am - 12.30pm in the Lend and Mend Hub, Central Library.

Join Rachel for a three week project block in October where you shall be guided through turning your old jeans into a brand new tote bag! Rachel will guide you through deconstructing your old jeans, working with heavier fabrics and how you can preserve features of the jeans such as pockets for use on your new bag.

Please bring at least one pair of denim or heavy weight canvas trousers with you for use. There will be some additional fabrics available but the idea is to bring new life to an existing unloved item in your wardrobe so please do ensure you bring something with you.

This project block is suitable for confident beginners and above.

A three week block with the sessions taking place on Tuesday 8, 15 and 29 October
