Next steps for Northfield schools estate approved

A programme aimed at addressing the surplus of schools in Northfield and improving the provision of education in the area took a step further this week.

Aberdeen City Council’s Education and Children’s Services committee approved a report on the feasibility of consolidating and improving the schools estate in Northfield and reviewing the long-term future of Northfield Academy with a view to delivering better quality learning environments for pupils.

Further work will now be undertaken by council staff and their progress will be reported in an update to the council’s School Estate Plan by September.

Councillor Martin Greig, Convener of the Education and Children’s Services committee, Aberdeen City Council, said “The recent engagement with local people on the future of schools in Northfield had to be interrupted to find out if there was aereated concrete in the buildings.

“The material was not detected in any of the primary schools but is present in some locations in Northfield Academy. Further work will be carried out to ensure pupils have a safe and appropriate learning environment for the future. We will continue to keep the community informed and engaged in the process."
