The 2024 campaign for people to help Clean Up Aberdeen was launched today with a special Aberdeen Football Club guest helping Hazlehead Primary School pupils.
Angus The Bull – the Dons’ official mascot – ensured the youngsters were moo-ving around helping to clean up an area next to the school.
Angus The Bull was joined by Communities, Housing, and Public Protection Convener Councillor Miranda Radley and Education and Childrens Services Convener Councillor Martin Greig.
Cllr Radley said: “Clean Up Aberdeen is a positive initiative to encourage people to do their bit for where they live, as collecting litter when out and about really starts to add up and improves the environment for wildlife, people, and the overall community.
“We all want our neighbourhoods to be tidy, clean, and green places and Aberdeen City Council wants to help local communities to help themselves to achieve that.”
The Hazlehead Primary School pupils are experts in cleaning-up Aberdeen as they are the reigning 2023 city clean up champions and were second in the regional schools’ competition.
Cllr Greig said: "It is reassuring to see the commitment and enthusiasm of the young people in helping to clean up the area as they are really taking a lead and making a difference to improve our environment.
“Their example is a useful reminder that we all share responsibility to take action and reduce litter. I am very grateful to Hazlehead Primary for the excellent support they are giving to look after the wellbeing of the community.”
As well as making the city more beautiful, some clean ups survey the waste which is found around the city including the beach and provides valuable data to the Marine Conservation Society and Keep Scotland Beautiful. This data helps identify issues and focus campaigns to improve the environment.”
The launch means everyone in the city is being encouraged to help to Clean Up Aberdeen by reducing waste, litter-picking, and appreciating wildlife in their own neighbourhood.
These small differences carried out by an individual can make big changes to making entire communities cleaner, greener, and brighter for everyone to enjoy.
Clean Up Aberdeen is aligned to the national campaign Keep Scotland’s Spring Clean Scotland 2024.
The campaign also ties into Climate Week North-East by focusing on waste reduction, recycling, small improvements making big difference, appreciating wildlife on your doorstep, and a litter-picking session.
