In certain circumstances, where you have an emergency that means you can't vote in person, you can apply for an emergency proxy vote. This must be something that you weren't aware of before the normal proxy vote deadline. Applications should be made to the Electoral Registration Office (ERO).

You must be 18 years old to vote at this election.

This election is being held to elect Members of Parliament (MPs) to the UK Parliament.

One candidate will be elected to serve as an MP for each constituency (Aberdeen North and Aberdeen South).

Postal voters, regardless of whether they have received their postal vote or not, cannot vote at a polling place. They are entitled to a replacement postal vote until 5pm on 4th July. Voters in Aberdeen can pick this up from the Town House. Completed postal vote forms can then be handed in to polling stations for collection prior to the stations closing at 10pm.

The election will be held on Thursday 4 July 2024, with voting between 7am and 10pm.

Vote counting will start immediately after the close of poll.

The results should be announced in the early hours of Friday 5 July 2024.

First Past the Post. The candidate with the most votes is elected as the MP for that constituency.

Guidance on eligibility and nomination forms can be found on our general election 2024 page. Nomination forms must be completed and lodged with the Election Office during the nomination period, which is between Monday 3 June and Friday 7 June, between 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday. A candidate and agents briefing session was held virtually via Microsoft Teams, which can be viewed on our general election 2024 page.

The nomination period for the UK Parliamentary General Election is between Monday 3 June and Friday 7 June 2024. Nominations can be lodged between the hours of 10am and 4pm on each working day during this period at the Elections Office, Town House, Broad Street, Aberdeen, AB10 1FY.

The Notice of Poll and Situation of Polling Stations will be published shortly after the close of nominations on Friday 7 June 2024.

Poll cards will be dispatched around 11 June 2024.

Postal votes are issued in two batches. The first will be sent around 19th June and the second around 26 June 2024. If your postal vote hasn’t arrived by Friday 28 June 2024 please get in touch and we can check it's status for you.

Yes. For this election if you want to vote at a polling place, you will need show an accepted type of photographic ID to the polling staff. More information on what forms of photographic ID are acceptable can be found on our Voter ID page. This only applies to UK elections/by-elections, voter ID is not required for Scottish Parliament or Local Government elections/by-elections.

It is now the law that you must show an accepted type of photographic ID to vote at UK Parliamentary Elections, as per the Elections Act 2022. This was introduced to eliminate the risk of someone casting another's vote at the polling stations.

Acceptable forms of ID include:

Passport issued by the UK, any of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, a British Overseas Territory, an EEA state or a Commonwealth country (including an Irish Passport Card) .
A Blue Badge.
Scottish National Entitlement Card issued for the purpose of concessionary travel (including a 60+, disabled or under 22s bus pass).
Older Person’s Bus Pass funded by the UK Government.
Disabled Person’s Bus Pass funded by the UK Government.
an identity card bearing the Proof of Age Standards Scheme hologram (a PASS card) for example, a Young Scot card.
Biometric immigration document.
Ministry of Defence Form 90 (Defence Identity Card).
National identity card issued by an EEA state.
Voter Authority Certificate.
Anonymous Elector’s Document.

You can still use your photo ID if it's out of date, as long as it looks like you.
The name on your ID should be the same name you used to register to vote.

Yes, you must show your face to polling staff so they can compare with your photographic ID. You may request a private area/privacy screen to remove any face coverings if you wish. A mirror will be available to help replace any face coverings. You may also request a member of staff of the same gender, which will be facilitated if possible.

If you do not already have an accepted photo ID, you can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate (VAC) from the Electoral Registration Office (ERO). You will need to submit a photo with your application, similar to a passport application. If you need help taking a photo, the ERO will be able to do this for you. To apply or for more information please visit the UK Government's Apply for photo ID page. Applications for Voter Authority Certificates (VACs) must be made before 5pm on Wednesday 26 June 2024.

A Voter Authority Certificate (VAC) is a document provided for free by the Electoral Registration Office (ERO) that can be used as photographic ID at thte polling station. You can get more information and apply on the UK Government's Apply for photo ID website.

Yes. Your proxy will need to show their accepted photographic ID in order to vote on your behalf.

Yes. If you realise on polling day you have not posted your postal vote yet, you may hand over your completed postal vote at any polling place within Aberdeen City. These will not be put in the ballot box but a separate packet where they are taken directly to the count for processing. The staff at the polling station will require you to complete a form when handing in a postal vote. If you do not complete the form, your postal vote will be rejected.

You may hand in your postal vote to staff at the Town House reception between the hours of 9am and 5pm. The staff will require you to complete a form when handing in a postal vote. If you do not complete the form, your postal vote will be rejected.

Yes. You may only hand in six postal votes (five others and your own) in total at this election. If you hand in more than six postal votes, all but your own will be rejected. You must complete a form from the election staff when you hand in your postal vote(s), otherwise your vote will be rejected.

No. It is an offence for political campaigners to handle postal votes of another person unless that person is a close relative or someone for whom they or the organisation which employs them provide regular care. A political campaigner is defined as someone who is a candidate at the election; someone who is an election agent at the election; someone who is a subagent at the election; someone who is employed or engaged by a candidate at an election for the purposes of that election; someone who is a member of a registered political party carrying out activities designed to promote a particular outcome at the election; and/or someone employed or engaged by a political party in connection with party political activities.

Yes. The 15 year limit on voting for British citizens living oversaeas has been removed. Any British citizen who was previously registered to vote in the UK or who previously lived in the UK will be able to register to vote regardless of how long they have lived abroad. To register, contact the Electoral Registration Office.

The Returning Officer takes all reasonable steps to provide support for disabled voters at polling stations.

Remember if you cannot or do not wish to vote in person, you may apply for a postal or a proxy vote

To ensure polling places are accessible:
All polling places are wheelchair accessible.
All polling booths have one section accessible to wheelchair users.
Staff wearing ID badges so they are easily identifiable to offer help when needed.
Large print ballot papers are displayed and available to view.
Tactile voting devices are available, to enable blind and partially sighted voters to mark their ballot papers independently.
Magnifying glasses are available to increase the size of text on ballot papers or written guidance.
A torch is available should additional lighting be required.
Pencil grips to attach to pencils when marking your ballot paper (you may bring your own pen or pencil if you prefer).

To assist you, you can take your phone into the polling booth to use magnifier or text-to-speech apps, or the phone torch to improve lighting. Please inform the Presiding Officer if you will be using these before you go to the polling booth.

The Presiding Officer and polling staff are there to help and support you vote. They will have ID badges so you can easily identify them. They can assist by:

Explaining the voting process.
Providing the tactile voting device and explaining how it works.
Reading out the candidates’ names and parties in the order on the ballot paper.
Mark your ballot paper for you if required.
You can choose anyone who is over 18 to accompany you in the polling station to help you vote, including carers who may not themselves be eligible to vote at the election. 
Both Presiding Officer and/or the person assisting you to vote is required to complete a declaration form at the polling place before they assist you. They are bound by the Requirement of Secrecy and cannot disclose how you voted.
