Pilot approved to support families facing complex challenges

A new approach is to be taken to support families facing complex challenges in Aberdeen.

Aberdeen City Council’s Education and Children’s Services committee today (Tuesday 2 July 2024) approved the Family Support Model plan, which aims to empower residents, building trust and consistent relationships with them, and providing flexible, responsive and more aligned support that meets their needs.

The plan will be piloted in Northfield by the Council and community partners.

Councillor Martin Greig, the Convener of Aberdeen City Council’s Education and Children’s Services committee, said: “It is important that families receive support at an early, preventative stage.

“The Family Support Model will allow us to understand a child’s needs in the broadest possible way, at home, at school, and in the community.”

Councillor Jessica Mennie, Vice-Convener of the Education and Children’s Services committee, said: “We welcome this plan which will reflect the unique context of each community and the complexity of individual families.”

The pilot will take account of the findings from the Edge of Care evaluation, also approved at today’s committee, which aims to shift the focus from reactive to a more preventative approach by closely involving families.
