JET Project (Just Energy Transition)

Aberdeen Just and Clean Energy Transition Project

Scotland's ambitious climate change legislation set a target date for net zero emissions of all greenhouse gases by 2045. To meet Scotland's targets, a rapid transformation across all sectors of the economy and society is required.   Since the discovery of North Sea oil in the late 1960s, Aberdeen has been known as the offshore oil and gas capital of Europe.

A successful energy transition process is vital for Scotland and the UK to meet their climate goals and ensure a prosperous and sustainable future of its economy. Energy transitions are sometimes seen as a macro concept. In reality, they are rooted in place and community. Nowhere more so than in Aberdeen – the energy capital of Europe. Indeed, Aberdeen is at the heart of the energy transition – delivering energy security, net zero targets and ensuring a just transition.

The challenge is how to deliver an inclusive and just energy transition for all in an energy city that has been built on oil and gas for over 50 years. A global and local partnership and  consortium of major public and private organisations has just been established. It seeks to engage with and empower the people and communities in Aberdeen city, and focus on co-creating, developing and delivering a pragmatic “bottom up” human-centric action plan. If all goes well, it is hoped that lessons learned in Aberdeen can be exported across the globe.

The World Energy Council, Aberdeen City Council and BP have come together.

The project has been phased to ensure that progress can be carefully monitored, and adjustments made based on real-time reactions.

The project includes the following phases:

Phase 1 includes a rapid evidence review, engagement and survey work focused on energy literacy and understanding of a just energy transition.  The learning and impactful process developed will be disseminated and shared with the Aberdeen city and the World Energy Council’s global network.

In phase 2 the Consortium will expand to include more private sector participants.  The purpose of the Consortium is to engage the people, communities, and businesses of Aberdeen in a location based ‘lab’ to understand how the energy transition can be accelerated and to initiate projects to deliver a clean and just transition.

This is a unique project which brings together public and private organisations as part of a portfolio of global impact initiatives run by the World Energy Council.
