The three finalists for the People’s Champion 2022 category of Aberdeen City Council’s annual staff Star Awards have been announced.
The Star Awards are the Council’s annual staff recognition awards, which includes the People’s Champion and is the only award category that is nominated and voted for by the people of Aberdeen.
All nominations were reviewed and the top three were selected by an external panel made up of representatives from local voluntary groups.
Council Co-Leader, Councillor Ian Yuill, said: “This is the people of Aberdeen’s chance to recognise their champion. Congratulations to this year’s finalists, we look forward to celebrating the winner/winners later in the month.”
Council Co-Leader, Councillor Alexander Nicoll, said: “It is important that we highlight the exceptional staff within the council who go above and beyond in their role to improve the lives of the people and or communities in Aberdeen."

The winner of this year’s People’s Champion will be revealed at the Star Awards 10th Anniversary ceremony on Friday 30 September 2022.
The nominees are:
Aberdeen City Council’s Waste and Recycling team.
The team were nominated for their hard work at the front line during the pandemic and their resilience following the recent fire at the Altens East facility.
On behalf of the team, Pam Walker, Waste and Recycling manager, said: “Being nominated for the People's Champion Award means more than many might think. Our service is often the unseen and unsung hero providing services to every household and many businesses across the city day in day out regardless of the weather, limited resources, Covid or the many other factors that can impact on the requirement to empty around 130,000 bins every week.”
Karen Henderson, Museum Assistant.
Karen was nominated for her passion and excellent customer service in her role.
Karen said: “I honestly feel so overwhelmed but also so grateful to those who put me forward. I love working at Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums and each day i can honestly say coming into work especially in Provost Skene's House is utterly amazing. I enjoy meeting all our visitors, local and international, and seeing the joy on their faces as they wander round enjoying the exhibits or after listening to my tours. The tours for me are a huge highlight...they make my day!”
Dorothy Burke, Community Development Worker.
Dorothy was nominated for going above and beyond at work and in her own time and shown passion and commitment in making a difference and having a positive impact on the Ukrainians in Aberdeen.
Dorothy said: “I am really pleased and surprised to be nominated for this award I couldn't quite believe it. I am part of a wider team who I have enjoyed working alongside and being part of. I really appreciate being recognised for my work, I was rather excited and emotional when I first heard I had been nominated and then getting through to the finals was amazing. It's good to be able to highlight the community team and the important work they do in Aberdeen.”
