Generations of all ages enjoy The King’s Coronation celebrations

The historic Coronation of King Charles III was celebrated by generations of all ages across Aberdeen this weekend.

On Friday, specially-prepared Coronation-themed packs which contained cakes and decorations made by local school pupils were delivered to nursing homes and sheltered housing complexes across the city, to allow residents to come together and celebrate the event while watching the TV coverage.

In his role as His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant, the Lord Provost of Aberdeen Dr David Cameron along with children from Kingswells Primary School, delivered the Coronation packs to two local care facilities in Kingswells.  A number of the city’s Deputy Lieutenants also supported the initiative by assisting with the deliveries.

The King’s Coronation family celebration event was held in Duthie Park earlier today and was hosted by the Lord Lieutenant after he returned from attending The King’s Coronation in London yesterday.

People braved the drizzly weather and brought their own picnics to soak up the celebratory atmosphere thanks to live music from local band Iron Broo, along with performances from The Grampian and District Pipes and Drums and The Rock Choir.  Children and adults alike enjoyed the variety of free activities on offer including face painting, a climbing wall, Zorb's and segways.

The Lord Lieutenant said: “It has been a fantastic weekend in Aberdeen as residents and visitors alike came out in force to celebrate and enjoy The King’s Coronation. Despite the weather, it was great to see hundreds of families enjoying the free event at Duthie Park today.

“I was also delighted to see more than 100 Coronation cakes and decorations delivered to many of the city’s nursing homes and sheltered housing complexes.

“I hope that the cakes and decorations we provided were enjoyed by all the residents while they were no doubt watching the national celebrations on the television. It was important that we included those who are of His Majesty The King’s own generation, many of whom will remember the last Coronation Day in 1953 for Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth.”

A private Service of Thanksgiving to mark the Coronation of King Charles is being held on Saturday at St Machar’s Cathedral (by invitation only).  Many of the region’s Lord Lieutenants will attend including Alexander Manson, Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire, Alastair Macphie, Lord Lieutenant of Kincardineshire, and Andrew Simpson, Lord Lieutenant of Banffshire, along with other notable invited guests from the military, emergency services, and local voluntary organisations.
