open+ at Aberdeen City Libraries

Aberdeen City Council have introduced open+, which is a system that allows library members to access Dyce library when it is unstaffed, making it more accessible to the community.

A limited number of library members will be able to sign up for open+ as part of a pilot trial of open+ at Dyce Library.

Registration for open+ is now live. Please speak to a member of staff at Dyce Library, or email dycelibrary@aberdeencity.gov.uk for more details.

The open+ library system provides:

  • access to free Wi-Fi
  • access to full range of stock and self-service issue and returns
  • access to PCs and printers
  • access to wireless printing via Princh
  • access to a warm, comfortable study and reading space

Full terms and conditions for the open+ service:

Listed below are a series of Frequently Asked Questions about the new Open+ service.

open+ allows us to extend opening hours at Dyce Library by giving you access to the library when staff are not present.

During the pilot period, a limited number of library members over the age of 16 can register to use open+ if:

  1. You have been a library member for at least 3 months
  2. Your account is active (in use) and your use of any library service has not been suspended
  3. Your current balance on your account is less than £10.00

However, if you have any recent history of misusing library services, or breaching our policies we may decline registration for this service.

Those under the age of 16 are welcome to use the library during open+ hours when accompanied by a responsible, registered user.

You will need to visit Dyce Library in person, speak to a member of library staff, agree to the terms and conditions of use, and undertake an induction.

Currently no, it will only be possible to register for open+ access at Dyce Library.

The way we use library services is changing and technology means that many of us are doing a lot more for ourselves.

open+ has allowed us to extend the opening hours at Dyce Library, without changing the number of staffed hours, thus providing users with more choice about when they use the library.

No. open+ allows us to extend the number of hours that Dyce Library is open.

Almost as much as you can do when the staff are present – use the quiet space to read, study, borrow books or other items through the self-service kiosk, and use the computers and Wi-Fi.

There is CCTV coverage throughout the building for your safety and peace of mind and emergency contact will be available. However, use of the library outside of staffed hours will be strictly at your own risk.

We provide an emergency telephone on the library counter that will automatically connect users to a manned helpline or directly to the police. You can use the phone for any kind of emergency, such as fire, flood, medical problems, or to report other members of the public abusing the facility.

A set of Terms and Conditions will be provided when you register for open+ access and you will be given an induction by staff. We will withdraw access privileges if we think that the service is being abused.

The regular staffed opening hours for Dyce Library are 10am-5pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday,
