People in detention

Qualification criteria

Some people in detention are disregarded for council tax purposes. This means that we bill your household as if you were not living there. If you live alone you will not have to pay council tax.

You qualify for this disregard if:

  • You are in detention
  • Your home is still regarded as your sole or main residence
  • You are not under open arrest
  • Your detention is not less than 48 hours
  • You are not in prison for non-payment of a fine.

You must meet all of the above criteria to qualify.
