Support over the festive period

There will be several changes to our services due to the public holidays during the festive period. Below is information about the support available to citizens. 

Our online services will be available as usual throughout the festive period. During this this time you can continue to make payments, report issues, make applications and renew library loans.

Our chatbot, AB-1 is also available 24 hours a day / 7 days a week on our website and Facebook messenger to help you with your queries.

Remember to follow our social media channels for up-to-date news over the festive period.

We will be using social media to provide urgent news and service updates which will include messages scheduled in advance.

Our Emergency Response Contact Centre Team will progress any emergency requests throughout the festive period relating to waste, trees, grounds, housing repairs, environmental health, roads and street lighting. The team will only progress requests that are a genuine emergency. Please report any non-emergencies online. Otherwise you can contact us by telephone after 3 January when our normal operating hours resume.

  • Gas Leaks - If you smell gas or suspect a leak, call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately at 0800 111 999 (available 24/7, free to call). For textphone users, dial 0800 371 787
  • Water Supply - If you are experiencing a loss of supply you can view known issues in your area online or call Scottish Water- 0800 0778 778 (available 24/7, free to call)
  • Flooding - You can view real time flood alerts in your area online from The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) or call their dedicated Floodline: 0345 988 1188 (available 24/7, free to call)
  • Health - For non emergency health concerns call NHS24: 111 
  • Crimestoppers: 0800 555 111 (available 24/7, free to call)
  • Police Scotland: in an emergency call 999. For non-emergencies call 101
  • Alcoholics Anonymous: 0800 9177 650
  • The Samaritans: 116 123
  • Scotland's Domestic Abuse Helpline: 0800 027 1234

If you require support applying, our Community Support Team are available by telephone on 0800 0304 713 on Friday 27 December – 9am - 5pm and Monday 30 December – 9am - 5pm.

The Registrars will be operating a telephone service for enquiries and telephone death registration appointments only as follows: 

  • Wednesday 25 December – closed 
  • Thursday 26 December - closed
  • Friday 27 December  9am - 5pm
  • Monday 30 December 9am - 5pm
  • Tuesday 31 December to Thursday 2 January – Closed
  • Friday 3rd January – 9am – 5pm

If you feel unwell over the festive period phone NHS 24 on 111 if you:

  • think you need to go to Accident and Emergency but it's not life threatening
  • are too ill to wait for your GP practice to open
    NHS 24 will help you get the right care in the right place, often closer to home and without the need to go to A&E.


There are also organisations and support groups operating over the festive period to support your mental health and wellbeing.

We are working together with partner organisations across Aberdeen to provide a range of public warm spaces that will provide an opportunity for people to come together, share and use resources. Bin Collections

Residents with household wheeled bin collections on Wednesday 25 December and Wednesday 1 January will receive a collection on Saturday 21 December and Saturday 28 December respectively.

Waste collections operate at reduced levels over the festive period and your bin uplift time may be different to normal. Please have your bin out by 7am to ensure your bin is emptied.


Bad weather can cause collection delays – please leave your bin out and check for updates.

Christmas tree collections

Households with wheeled bins

We will collect your real Christmas tree on your usual brown bin collection day between  6-17 January. Please place your tree next to your bin.
Residents do not need to have a garden waste permit to have their tree collected.

Households using communal bins 

Please leave your tree beside your communal bin, ensuring the bin is still accessible to others and collection crews.  

Remember, you can recycle your tree at your nearest Household Waste and Recycling Centre at any time. 

Recycling points

Recycling points will remain open throughout the festive period. If your recycling bin is full, please take additional items to your nearest recycling point. Find out more about recycling points.

Household Waste and Recycling Centres

Household Waste and Recycling centres will be closed on Christmas Day and New Years day only. 

When visiting a HWRC remember:

  • ID is required (City home address only) 
  • Larger vehicles and trailers need to book an appointment

Find your nearest Household Waste and Recycling Centre.

There are no business waste collections on 25 December or 1 January. If you are due an Aberdeen City Council business waste collection on these days, please leave your bin out on Sunday 22 December and Saturday 28 December instead.

Police Scotland will continue to operate as normal from the Customer Service Centre over the festive period.  


The Customer Service Centre will be closed throughout the Christmas and New Year period, except for signposting, self-service facilities and emergency face to face support from 9am to 5pm on Friday 27 December and Monday 30 December.

Aberdeen City Libraries will be open as follows over the Christmas and New Year period: 

  • Christmas Day - Closed 
  • Boxing Day- Closed 
  • 27 December - Open as normal 
  • 28 December - Open as normal 
  • 29 December - Open as normal 
  • 30 December - Open as normal except Central Library closing at 7pm
  • 31 December - Closed 
  • 1 January - Closed 
  • 2 January- Closed 
  • 3 January - Open as normal
