Apply for a carriageway white line ‘keep clear’ marking outside an access or a driveway

Carriageway white line ‘keep clear’ markings outside access points or driveways (also known as H markings) are reserved for sites where there is frequent obstruction of an access point. These road markings are designed to make motorists aware that there is a dropped kerb or vehicle access point adjacent to the section of carriageway concerned,

Further information

  • The white line H marking is only intended to mark out the width of the driveway/access, so will only be provided from a point where the kerbs start sloping down (usually 1 metre from the edge of the driveway/access).
  • H markings are advisory road markings and have no legal significance, and consequently parking on them is not an offence where the City Wardens service can provide enforcement. Instead, the offence remains one of obstruction, whether or not an H marking is present, and where Police Scotland would have powers of enforcement, and would require to be contacted via their Tel. 101 service.

Cost and maintenance

  • We charge £213 to provide the new white line H marking. This fee is waived where any resident in the property concerned holds a valid disabled persons’ badge (the ‘Blue Badge’).
  • You will be liable for any future maintenance costs to refresh the H marking. Maintenance work must be carried out by our approved contractor. To request repainting of existing carriageway markings, please complete the application form again. There will be a charge of £213 for repainting.
  • The markings only last for around one year when they are applied to granite setts, cassies, cobbles etc. Consequently, the maintenance costs will be higher for markings applied to these surface types.
  • Please note if your application is received in the late Summer, Autumn or Winter, there is a possibility the H marking will not be applied to the carriageway until the following Spring.
