Taxi Vehicle Inspection Testing

This information applies to both private hire and taxis

It is a requirement of Section 11 of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982 that the holder of a taxi or private hire car licence must present the vehicle for inspection and testing when required to do so by the licensing authority.

The Licensing Committee’s policy is that vehicles should be inspected twice a year.

Kittybrewster Depot, Powis Terrace

Appointments are available from 8.15am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

We allocate 30 minutes for full taxi tests. Retest slots are allocated 15 mins.

Taxi test charges are included in the licence application fee and are non-refundable.

There is no additional fee required unless the vehicle receives a fail notice - vehicle off the road (VOR). The charge for a retest is £33.

If you fail to attend your appointment or if an appointment is cancelled/amended with less than 24 hours notice a £33 late cancellation fee will apply.

See a full list of current prices and fees.

A copy of the vehicle logbook (V5C), valid insurance and MOT (if applicable) must be presented every time your vehicle is tested (even if the same documents were presented at your last test).

Vehicles should be presented for testing in a condition to pass the test in accordance with the requirements set out in the testing manual:

Yes, the retest fee is chargeable regardless of whether the vehicle needs to go back on the ramp to enable the retest to be carried out.

No, all taxi testing is by appointment only.  All retests must be booked into an appointment slot prior to the vehicle attending the Test Centre.  We also require time to process paperwork and book future appointments, which is why we allow 15mins for each retest.

Unfortunately, we are unable to process payments over the phone.

Payments and applications can be submitted in person at either Kittybrewster or Marischal College.
