Why are we asking for your information?
Aberdeen City Council’s Dyslexia Outreach Service supports children and young people in an educational setting who have been diagnosed with Dyslexia. The Council uses the information gathered in the request for assistance as part of the assessment process. This assessment process helps us to decide upon the most appropriate type and level of support for the pupil or young person whilst they are in education, to allow them to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors. In some cases, information will be added to our records using automated processing, to speed up the time it takes to deal with simple processes. Decisions about your children and young people are not made using automated decision-making.
ACC will normally only share information (other than in pupil protection situations) in order to provide services for the pupil as part of his/her school education. We have an agreement with Police Scotland, NHS Grampian, Moray Council and Aberdeenshire Council which governs how we share data with these partners. ACC’s partner agencies can be found on our education website with further details of the information that we share with each partner.
How long we keep your information for
Throughout the time that the pupil or young person is receiving support, we will keep records about the type of support they are given and the progress they are making. This information will be stored safely and securely, and we will keep it for 1 year from the date the pupil or young person leaves the service or the date of the last contact. We will keep anonymised data beyond this period for the purposes of auditing service provision and quality assurance.
Your rights
You’ve got legal rights about the way the Council handles and uses your data, which include the right to ask for a copy of it, and to ask us to stop doing something with your data.

You also have the right to make a complaint to the Information Commissioner’s Office. They are the body responsible for making sure organisations like the Council handle your data lawfully.
Our legal basis
Aberdeen City Council is the Data Controller for this information about you. Wherever the Council processes personal data, we need to make sure we have a legal basis for doing so in data protection law. The Council understands our legal basis for processing personal data in relation to Dyslexia Outreach Service as part of our public task, under the Education (Scotland) Act 2016, Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2009 and the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014. In carrying out this function, the Council is also likely to process special categories of personal data. The Council understands our legal basis for doing so because processing is necessary for reasons of substantial public interest.
