Aberdeen as a sustainable food place
Aberdeen has been a network member of the Sustainable Food Place partnership programme since 2017. It is working through the stages of the scheme and has currently been awarded a silver award. Granite City Good Food is a partnership of city stakeholders working to achieve the gold award. The award is given after assessing progress under the six key issues of:
- Taking a strategic and collaborative approach to good food governance and action
- Building public awareness, active food citizenship and a local good food movement
- Tackling food poverty and diet related ill-health and increasing access to affordable healthy food
- Creating a vibrant, prosperous and diverse sustainable food economy
- Transforming catering and procurement and revitalizing local and sustainable food supply chains
- Tackling the climate and nature emergency through sustainable food and farming and an end to food waste

Glasgow declaration on food and climate
A third of global greenhouse gas emissions and 80% of biodiversity loss is attributed to the human food system. In October 2021 Aberdeen City Council signed the Glasgow Declaration on Food and Climate. The Declaration brings together local authorities in renewing their commitments to develop sustainable food policies and actions and it calls on national governments to put food and farming at the heart of the global response to climate action.
School meals
The Aberdeen City Council school meals service has achieved a bronze ‘Food for Life Served Here’ certification. It began the process of certification in 2012 and in 2015 achieved the Bronze level for its primary school meals. In 2017 it extended the award to cover its secondary schools too: a total of 11,200 meals served daily.
Fairtrade
Many fair trade products are food items. Aberdeen is a Fairtrade City and Aberdeen City Council supports this accreditation with its own Fairtrade Resolution.
