Hazlehead Park is one Aberdeen’s oldest historic properties. It was originally part of the great hunting forests of Stocket just outside the city. In 1319 the land was gifted to the city by King Robert the Bruce, as part of the ‘Freedom Boundary’, in appreciation for the support that the townspeople gave prior to the King’s victory over the English at Bannockburn in 1314.
The land was returned to Aberdeen Town Council in 1920 for £40,000 with the intention of creating a park for use by the citizens of Aberdeen.
Hazlehead Park encompasses both city and countryside with its formal garden layouts, woodland walks, nature trails and bridleways. This park truly has something for all the family including:
- Two golf courses
- Maze
- Mini zoo (Pets' Corner)
- Heather and conifer garden
- Azalea garden
- Large children’s playground and
- Cafe.
There are two formal rose gardens; the Queen Mother’s Rose Garden and the North Sea Memorial Rose Garden a memorial to the victims of the Piper Alpha Production Platform disaster as its centrepiece.
The Park Cafe offers a range of food and refreshments in their attractively refurbished home. Find out more about the cafe by calling 01224 313 833.
A great place for jogs, family days out or quiet contemplation in the rose garden.
Dogs are allowed in the park, but must be kept under control.
Memory Path
The memory path in Hazlehead Park is located across from the Queen Mother Rose Gardens.
The idea of the memory path is to have some inscription on a stone in the path to dedicate a memory of your loved one.
The inscription should be a haiku, a verse, a quote or a line from a poem or part of a song lyric which triggers a happy memory of the person you wish to dedicate the memory stone to, but not a memorial with the person’s name.
