Using the collection for research

We welcome enquiries and requests to view our collections. Our team of specialist curators have a wealth of knowledge about local, industrial, maritime and social history, contemporary art, art history and archaeology.

Our main collection store, Aberdeen Treasure Hub, houses artwork and historic artefacts when not on display, alongside extensive archives.

Collections Access Policy

We also have libraries filled with resources to aid research:

  • The McBey Library in Aberdeen Art Gallery holds well over 150 years of collected books, periodicals and archives relating to the art collections.
  • The Lloyds Library in Aberdeen Maritime Museum houses primary sources relating to maritime history, including Lloyd's Registers of Shipping between 1778 to 2008.  There are also excellent secondary sources on the subjects of fishing, shipbuilding, navigation, oil and gas, and marine art.
  • A rich selection of archaeological and local history reference books can be found across our venues.

Dedicated study areas are available at Aberdeen Treasure Hub, the Art Gallery and Maritime Museum.

We are working to photograph and catalogue all the collection. If you can’t find what you are looking for, please let us know.  If you’d like to help us why not consider sharing your knowledge or even volunteering?
