Joyce W Cairns PRSA DEd(hc) HRA HRHA HRWA HRBA RSW MA(RCA) is an acclaimed painter and printmaker who has a long association with Aberdeen. She studied painting at Gray’s School of Art (1966–1971) and the Royal College of Art (1971– 74). From 1976 to 2004 she taught Drawing & Painting at Gray’s before taking early retirement to complete the vast body of work which culminated in War Tourist. This series was based on her father’s experience of war, backed up by extensive research following in his footsteps through Europe and Tunisia. 'In the Gulf they Dream of Sea and Ice', part of the series, is on display in Gallery 7. Joyce was the first woman to be elected President of the Royal Scottish Academy (2018–2022).
