Welcome to Aberdeen-built Ships

Aberdeen-built Ships is a database of over 3,000 ships recorded as being built in Aberdeen, and the shipyards which built them. It contains extensive information about the vessels including technical details, stories discovered from original sources, data from the Lloyd’s Register of Shipping, newspaper accounts and information passed to us by relatives and researchers. The project started over 20 years ago with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and our database has grown through the dedication of long-standing volunteers who continue to research the histories of Aberdeen-built Ships.

You can also find out about some vessels which, although not built in the city, were associated with it through ownership, operation, or reconstruction. These records are a window on Aberdeen’s rich maritime heritage and allow you to explore many of the associated items, plans, films and photographs cared for by Aberdeen Archives, Gallery and Museums.

If you can’t find the information you are looking for on these pages, have a story to share, or would like to help and join our Aberdeen-built ships volunteers, please get in touch. Complete our contact us form and select Aberdeen-built Ships from the drop-down menu.
