The 'BP Portrait Award' made a welcome return to Aberdeen, where it was presented for the first time in the BP Galleries on the stunning new top floor of the redeveloped Art Gallery. Organised by National Portrait Gallery, London, the exhibition continues to be an unmissable highlight in the annual art calendar.
This year Aberdeen Art Gallery was the only UK venue to host the most prestigious portrait painting competition in the world. The BP Portrait Award represents the very best in contemporary portrait painting. With a first prize of £35,000 and a total prize fund of £74,000, the Award is aimed at encouraging artists to focus upon and develop portraiture in their work.
See works by prize winners Jiab Prachakul, Sergey Svetlakov and Michael Youds alongside over 40 other outstanding works of portraiture. This year’s catalogue features a fascinating essay by Madeline Ward, our Lead Curator of Art, exploring the art of the self-portrait.

Lead Curator of Art Madeline Ward is joined by panellists including artists Jiab Prachakul (winner of this year’s First Prize), Egbert Modderman (winner of the Young Artist Award), finalist Jennifer MacRae and National Portrait Gallery Associate Curator Rosie Broadley.
