Fashion designer Zandra Rhodes launched her first collection, The Knitted Circle, in 1969. The 1960s were an exciting time for fashion and we have some lovely clothes and accessories from that era in our collection that I would like to share with you.

Green mini dress 1960s

Mini dress, 1960s

Mini skirts and dresses were the height of fashion in the 1960s. This green mini dress has a loose style and simple shape while the white chevron stripe adds dramatic flair. It was purchased from the Aberdeen shop 'Helen Hunter' which sold quality dresses from London designers.

Boots, 1960s

Mini skirts were often paired with long boots during the 1960s. These pink suede over-the-knee boots have block heels and round toes and fasten with a side zip.

Jackie O sunglasses

‘Jackie O’ Sunglasses, 1960s

This shape was very popular for 1960s sunglasses which were given the nickname 'Jackie Os' after Jackie Onassis the stylish widow of assassinated American President John F Kennedy. These sunglasses have round brown glass lenses in a pale yellow frame.

Bag, 1960s

The 1960s are known for bright colours but monochrome outfits combining black and white were very popular too. This handbag comprises one black bag and one white bag joined back to back with three press studs. It is very versatile because the bags can either worn together to provide extra storage space or they can be pulled apart to form two separate bags. Each bag has a double gilt chain handle.

Satin coat, 1960s

Satin coat, about 1965

The handbag would go nicely with this princess-line coat with fitted waist and flared skirt made from heavily ribbed satin. Dating to the mid-1960s, this coat is similar in style to those of the previous decade and recalls the elegance of Jackie Kennedy whose style was imitated by women everywhere.
