Explore the hidden history of Aberdeen that is buried beneath your feet with our archaeology collection.

Aberdeen Archives, Gallery and Museums has an incredibly rich archaeological collection, from finely carved bone objects to medieval clothing and coin hoards. We hold over 3,500 objects from around 100 excavations that took place in Aberdeen City over the last 40 years.

Our archaeology pages group our collection objects by the excavation site they were found on. We hope this will help you discover new insights into the collection and the history of Aberdeen. For each site, you will be able to see:

  • links to the objects and where they were found

  • descriptions of the excavation sites

  • locations of excavation sites

  • details on publications about the sites

  • reference numbers for the Historic Environment Records and Canmore

We are always working on improving our online archaeology object records. If there is something you would like more information on that you can’t find online, please get in touch via our Contact Us form.
