What is art and why does it matter? The study of Art History can tell us so much about the world around us, from our sense of identity to society and the environment. Join Dr Hans Hones of the University of Aberdeen and our art curators for three mornings of informal discussions and activities.
There is optional sketchbook development and visit to Aberdeen Treasure Hub in the afternoons.
To book your free space, email AAGMLearning@aberdeencity.gov.uk with your name, age and quote ‘Summer Sessions: Let’s Talk About Art’.
Session 1: Who am I?
From oil portraits to Instagram: Why do we present the world with an idealised image of ourselves? Explore how art has been used to shape and express identities – conventional or queer, rebellious or conforming.
Session 2: Art and environment
In this time of environmental crisis, how can art help us make sense of our place in the world? Explore how art can help us reflect on current ecological changes and imagine a more sustainable future.
Session 3: Ways of Seeing
Does how we look at things, influence what we see? Experiment with eye-tracking tech from the University of Aberdeen Psychology department to explore different ways of seeing.
Dr Hans Hones is a historian of 18th and 19th century art and photography at the University of Aberdeen. He is especially interested in the origins of art and climate and art.
You don’t have to know much about art to enjoy these sessions - you may have a special interest, or studying Art & Design or History, or you’re thinking about a career in the galleries and museums sector. Whatever your interest, you are welcome!
