Kristian Hagerup studied classical painting at Christiania Kunstakademi in Oslo. Working mainly to private commission, his work has been seen in group exhibitions in Oslo.
The portrait is of Arve, who has not been painted before, and is the husband of Hagerup’s mother. The bags and sheeting that form the background are a commentary on the plastic pollution that has affected the world’s oceans. The artist says: ‘In a short time, we have made a mark unlike any previous generation. Arve lives a quiet life, preferring to do things the way they have always been done. He is being told that change is necessary, but finds it demanding.’
